THE TEAM: 15 YEARS LATER
ETOBICOKE, ON: Reality TV, in its infancy, came to Humber College in the fall of 2000, as CBC filmed a documentary which followed the Humber Hawks men's basketball team from the beginning of training camp through to the final game. "The Team", as it was titled, captured the lives of the players and the coaching staff, complete with dramatic highs and personal lows throughout. All eight episodes of this drama were unveiled on CBC TV for the entire world to see.
When the last piece of film was cut, what CBC got was something special. On the court the Hawks provided the ultimate final episode as they captured the CCAA National Championship with a thrilling win over their rival Sheridan Bruins on home court before a packed house of over 2,000 raucous fans. Away from the court, everyone got an education and appreciation for the challenges that these student athletes faced on a daily basis, some of which are just heart wrenching.
There was no director calling cut, nor were there lines of a script to learn. It was just life, and the fact that these athletes and coaches opened the door for the world come in is something to applaud.
