No. 5 HAWKS MAKE IT EIGHT STRAIGHT AFTER DOMINANT WIN OVER ST. CLAIR

By: Eugenio Garro

ETOBICOKE, On: The no.5 Humber Hawks men's basketball team (11-3, 2nd West) defeated the St. Clair Saints (5-6, 6th West) Saturday night by a score of 99-81. The Hawks were led by Tyrone Dickson (Scarborough) who put up 17 points and 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.

After starting the season off slow, the Hawks men's basketball team have managed to turn things around; culminating in their eighth straight victory Saturday night.

The first quarter featured the Hawks offence and defence coming out strong and taking a 28-10 lead into the second. The 28 points scored in the first was the most the Hawks have put up in the opening frame all season.

The highlight of the first quarter was a monstrous dunk thrown down by Humber's Ancil Martin (Scarborough) for two of his first quarter seven points.

The Hawks continued to put up points in the second quarter but the Saints offence found an answer to the Hawks and managed to score 23 points in the second quarter.

At the end of the half, the Hawks led by a score of 53-33. Gibson Eduful (Toronto) and Martin led the Hawks in scoring with 11 points. Tyrone Dickson was a defensive beast in the first half, finishing with seven rebounds and three blocks.

Both teams went back and forth in the third quarter exchanging baskets at both ends. The Hawks scoring was slow at the beginning but picked up by the end of the quarter. Despite the slow start to the quarter for the Hawks they still managed to lead 75-55 at the end of the quarter.

Dickson continued to lead the Hawks; he already had his double-double before the fourth quarter.

The Hawks came out firing in the fourth quarter making it hard on the Saints to gain any momentum or hope of getting back into this game.

In the end the OCAA' s hottest team just proved to be too much for the Saints. With the win, the Hawks have now won eight in a row and sit second behind Mohawk.

"I felt at times we played very good defence," said Hawks head coach Shawn Collins. "In the first quarter we established ourselves really well."

The Hawks Nation player of the game went to Humber's Ancil Martin who returned to the line-up following a concussion. He finished the game with 11 points.

Much of the Hawks success down the stretch is due to the fact that the team is getting back to full strength after losing key players to injuries early on in the season. Another key to success for the Hawks is the fact they own the best defence in the West, holding opponents to 65.8 points-per-game.

"It's a combination of numbers and getting some bodies back," added Coach Collins, when asked what the key to the eight game winning streak has been.

He went on to comment about how better practices have also been a key factor, stating guys are "competing against each other in practice making each other better and it's starting to translate on the court."

Freshman C.J Bennett (Brampton) had an efficient game for Humber, ending with 11 points in only ten minutes.

The Hawks will now regroup and get ready to play Lambton on back-to-back nights. The Hawks this season are 4-0 in back-to-backs while Lambton is 2-0 on back-to-backs. Lambton is coming off an 84-66 loss in Saturday's matchup against the Sheridan Bruins.
