HAWKS TO OPEN DEFENCE OF THEIR CCAA TITLE ON SATURDAY

By: Natalie Stoberman

SARNIA, ON: Humber's basketball season kicks off this Saturday with the Hawks traveling to Lambton College for their season opener against the Lions for a 4 p.m. tip-off.

The Hawks have kept themselves busy with a crammed preseason against Canadian and American schools to get them game ready for high expectations after winning the CCAA National Championship. After unofficially going 6-6 in exhibition, Humber will finally get a chance to see how they fair against OCAA competition.

Last season the Lions finished with a 10-8 record in the West Division but could be relied upon to sink lots of buckets amongst some of the strongest offences in the league. Humber still swept the series with 91-75 and 92-73 regular season wins, but weren't let off easily in the first round of the playoffs that the Lions' forced into overtime before the Hawks took the 83-82 "W".

With that last match-up likely still in mind, the Lions have a lot to prove in the season opener. The Hawks on the other hand are coming off a bittersweet overtime loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks just over a week and ago.

What really shined was the quality of three point shooting and the team's 50 per cent shooting efficiency behind the arc, a quality that's transferred over from last season's successful squad. Along with strong veteran guards and post players, Humber has a good chance to get their season going on a good foot but only time will tell.
