WEARY HAWKS DROP 82-62 DECISION TO WISCONSIN’S CARROLL U
ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks, a bit weary after their win at the Naismith Invitational at the University of Waterloo this past weekend, were back on the hardcourt on Monday afternoon as they entertained the Wisconsin based Carroll University. The visiting Pioneers, who were also tested by a vigorous exhibition schedule, knocked off the Hawks by a score of 82-62.
The main rotational players of the Humber squad started, but were limited to their minutes on the court. With the proposed starters on the floor, it was the Hawks that ran out to an early lead, one they held at the end of the first quarter. After one, the scoreboard read 21-16, Hawks.
The Pioneers found their legs in the second quarter, outscoring the Hawks 25-12 and took a 41-33 into the locker room.
Carroll came out and built on the momentum they developed in the second quarter, and extended their lead to 62-43, after three.
The fourth and final quarter had the visitors strike for their third consecutive quarter in scoring in excess of 20 points. The Hawks also were able to find the basket in the quarter, scoring 19 points.
It was no surprise to see Carroll's Joel Heesh dominate the scoresheet at games end, as he recorded a game high 27 points. Kick in 13 rebounds and it was clear to see that he was Carroll's player of the game.
The Hawks rolled through 16 players in the game, and it was freshan Feliz Frimpong who led them on the day, with 10 points.
This "friendly" allowed both coaches the opportunity to give significant playing for many of the bench players, giving them valuable in-game experience.
"Playing games against NCAA based teams is always a positive", said Hawks head coach Patrick Au. "Although our guys were tired, they were excited to play the game and extend Humber's own style of hospitality."
Carroll will now head to York University for a controlled scrimmage tomorrow, and then visit the Windsor Lancers before crossing the border and head home. It was not all business for the Pioneers, as they did some sightseeing in Niagara Falls before taking the field today.
