MEN'S BASKETBALL BEGIN SEASON WITH WIN OVER FANSHAWE

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks men's basketball (1-0, 2nd West) program began their OCAA title defence Wednesday night with a 79-58 home opener win against the Fanshawe Falcons (0-1, 7th West).

After becoming the first college program to win the Naismith tournament, the Hawks were hoping to bring that momentum into the OCAA season.  Putting extra emphasis on their defence, the Hawks held Fanshawe to 20 first half points on 22.2 percent shooting from the floor.  Humber's ball movement was also on display, as 11 players scored as the Hawks jumped out to a 35-20 lead at half.  Fifth-year forward Ancil Martin (Scarborough) led all scorers with seven points.

The Falcons came into the second half with a better game plan and were able to score 21 points on 51.9 percent shooting, led by nine points from Alfred Johnson.  Unfortunately for Fanshawe, the Hawks continued their hot shooting and scored 25 points of their own.

In the end, Humber cruised to a 79-58 victory, picking up their first win of the OCAA season.  Tyrone Dickson (Scarborough), the Hawks' all-time rebounds leader, picked up a double-double after finishing with 14 points and ten rebounds.

Hawks nation player of the game was Trevon Mollison (Brampton), a transfer from St. Clair College.  The second-year guard finished with a game-high 15 points after shooting 4/4 from three-point range.

Head coach Patrick Au picked up his first career win for Humber.

The Hawks will now have a week off to prepare for a road game against the Niagara Knights (0-1, 8th West) on Thursday, November 3rd at the Welland Athletic Centre.
