SCARBOROUGH, ON: The Humber Hawks have advanced to the OCAA men's basketball semi-finals after an 82-61 win over the Seneca Sting this afternoon. With the win, Humber and Sheridan will take to the court at Centennial College on Friday night at 6pm in yet another chapter of "The Game".
Seneca entered the game as the higher seed, as they finished second in the East Division with a 17-3 record. Humber placed third in the West, and needed a home win over St. Lawrence - Kingston to advance to the OCAA final 8.
Both teams got off to slow starts, but the Hawks worked off the early rust and led 11-6 halfway through the first quarter. The Sting refused to allow the Hawks to take control early and turned the tables on their way to a nine point run and a 21-17 first quarter lead.
As mentioned in the title of this recap, it was the second quarter where Humber took over the game. The Hawks outscored Seneca by 15 points, and won the quarter 22-7. At the half, it was Humber in the lead 39-28. The key to this run was the odd efforts put in by centre and OCAA First Team All Star Tyrone Dickson. Dickson set his own personal record by draining two three-balls.
At the half, three Hawks were already in double figures. Dickson led the way with 12 points, while Ancil Martin and Gibson Eduful checked in with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Khalil Miller led the Sting, with 11.
Humber extended the lead to 18 points by the end of the third quarter. With this big lead, the coaching staff was able to reach into their bench thus providing a well-deserved rest for the starters.
The Hawks won the fourth quarter as well, but by a tighter three point margin, 21-18. The final score read 82-61 for Humber.
Tyrone Dickson, selected as the Humber Player of the Game, completed a double/double. He scored team-highs in points, with 18, and rebounds, with 10. All in all, five Hawks scored in double digits. Trevon Mollison and Ancil Martin had 15, Gibson Eduful (12) and Baljyot Judge (10) completed the package.
The Sting's Miller also recorded a double/double, with game highs in points (22) and rebounds (11). He was honoured as the Seneca Player of the Game.
Humber has advanced to the championship semi-finals against Sheridan at 6:00 pm on Friday, and the Sting will face the Redeemer Royals in the consolation semi-finals at 1:00 pm.
