Origin of the Humber Hawk

When Humber College was founded in 1967, the administrators within the athletic department pondered possible nicknames of the college athletic teams. It was in that instance that a hawk soared across the valley field that the campus overlooked. It was a natural choice, as the hawk represented the qualities that Humber Athletics would aspire to.  It is powerful, a predator and graceful. The name Humber Hawk not only sounded right, it perfectly embodied both sport and competition.

Humber Pride

Since 1981, a Humber student has adorned the mascot suit to entertain the Humber faithful and could often be seen imitating game officials (which is now against the rules), signing autographs, getting its picture taken with celebrities (Vince Carter, Lebron James, Steve Nash, among others), or dancing centre court during halftime.

Humber College's sense of school spirit is palpable, as it is encouraged and celebrated throughout all aspects of campus life. Although intrinsically bound to every aspect of campus life, school pride needs to be supported and fostered, and a mascot is an extremely effective way to do just that. With an emphasis on performance, personality, and professionalism, Howie the Hawk exemplifies the true Humber spirit, reflecting the heart and passion of the student body and faculty through a commitment to the pursuit of excellence through entertainment.
