THE STORYLINE

The Humber men's basketball team is heading to the playoffs again, making its 34th consecutive appearance in the OCAA postseason. With a 12-4 regular season record, the Hawks finished third in the competitive west division and will host St. Lawrence (9-11, 6th East) Saturday evening at the Humber Athletic Centre.

LAST TIME OUT vs. ST. LAWRENCE

In the 2016 provincial playoffs hosted by Humber College, the Hawks opened the tournament against St. Lawrence in the quarter-finals.  Despite featuring Player of the Year Jaz Bains, the Hawks came away with an 80-68 win, en route to their league best 14th provincial title. Tyrone Dickson finished with a game-high 14 rebounds, while Gibson Eduful and C.J. Bennett had 13 points apiece.

SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE

  • The Vikings snuck into the final east division playoff spot in its last game of the season with a win over the Durham Lords (10-10, 5th East).
  • Offensively, St. Lawrence is led by Jaz Bains, who is third in the league in scoring, averaging 21.6 ppg.
  • These two programs have met three times in the postseason and the Vikings have a slight 2-1 edge all-time. 
  • Entering the playoffs, St. Lawrence has lost five of its last seven OCAA contests.

  • The Hawks have won three straight OCAA medals, including seven over the previous eight seasons.
  • With a 12-4 record, Humber has reached the double digit-win plateau for the 18th straight season.
  • The Hawks boast a 34-4 (.895) record at the Humber Athletic Centre since the beginning of the 2013-14 season, including a perfect 4-0 in playoff games.

MAKING A STAND

Under first-year head coach Patrick Au, Humber finished with the top defence in the west division.

  • Opponents are scoring just 69.2 ppg, which is slightly above their mark of 68.1 from its national championship season.
  • Opponents are shooting 39.7 per cent from the floor, which ranks third in the OCAA west division.
  • Humber's rebounding margin of plus 10.6 ranks first in the association.
  • The Hawks have allowed the fewest made field goals this season (418).

HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE

  • Humber has posted a 248-32 (.889) regular season record at the Humber Athletic Centre since the start of the 1983-84 season.
  • Since 1983-84, the Hawks have enjoyed three home win streaks of at least 24 games: 31 games (1989 – Jan. 20, 1993), 50 games (Jan. 16, 2007 to Feb. 12, 2012), 24 games (Nov. 6, 2013 – Jan. 31, 2016).
