ETOBICOKE, Ont -- The Humber Hawks men's basketball team (7-2, 2nd West) extended their win streak to six games in a 95-77 win over the Mohawk Mountaineers (4-5, 5th West) Wednesday night.
The Hawks rallied around big games from Gibson Eduful (Toronto) and C.J. Bennett (Brampton) to jump into a tie atop the West division.
The first quarter of the game was wide open for the most part. Both teams were looking for that opportunity to help spark their team and for the Hawks it was fifth-year forward Tyrone Dickson (Scarborough), who came up with a big block.
At half time Humber led 40-33, with Dickson being a monster in the paint bringing in 13 rebounds and Bennett leading the team with 13 points.
Humber would come out in the third quarter hot, draining threes from every angle pushing the lead to 22 at one point. If it wasn't for the hot start, the game would have been closer heading into the fourth, as Humber's shooting dried up in the last minutes of the third quarter and Mohawk chipped away at the lead.
Humber's shooting would pick up at the beginning of the fourth quarter as they restored their lead and kept building on it as they found themselves up by as much as 33 points in the fourth.
Eduful, who was quiet in the first half, exploded with 19 points in the second and finished with 25 points, a season-high. Bennett finished the game with 22-points, also a season-high. Dickson finished the game with nine points and 17 rebounds.
Humber's two fifth-year players Eduful (Toronto) and Dickson (Scarborough) both moved up in the Humber all-time scoring list. Eduful moved up to fifth all-time, surpassing Locksley Turner (1980-83) with 753 points and Dickson moved into fourth all-time, surpassing Henry Frazer (1983-87) with 757 points.
Wednesday night wasn't only a basketball game at the Hawks Nest. Prior to game start, Humber revealed an LGBTQ+ banner that will be placed on display in the main gym. The banner represents Humber athletic's support for the LGBTQ+ community. More information regarding this event can be found here.
With the win, Humber improves to 26-7 all-time against Mohawk at the Humber Athletic Centre. The two teams will meet again in the second half of the season.
The Hawks will now have a month off from OCAA action before returning on January 11, when they will host the Redeemer Royals (3-4, 7th West).
