LONDON, ON: In the most significant game of the season to date, the Hawks (12-0, 1st West) defeated the Fanshawe Falcons (7-4, 4th West) 59-56 in a road battle in London on Saturday evening.
The Hawks and Falcons both came out surprisingly listless in the first quarter, and when the horn sounded it was the visitors with a slim 11-7 lead.
Humber came out on fire early in the second and ran out to a double digit lead, only to see the Falcons cut into it midway through the frame.
An overly aggressive shove from behind to Hawks star Ceejay Nofuente on a breakaway layup caused a bit of a ripple, as it could have easily been called an intentional foul. Nofuente stepped up to hit both free throws to extend the lead to 11.
As the half ended, it was Humber leading 28-19.
Fanshawe battled back in the third, and closed to four points before the Hawks reestablished a nine point lead at 43-34.
The Falcons refused to go away and won the fourth and final set 22-16, and came within a single point with seconds to play. Humber scored a late basket to extend the lead to three. Fanshawe was able to throw up a three point attempt, but it fell way short as the final horn sounded.
Aleena Domingo was the star on the night, as she eclipsed the 700 career point mark (702). Her season high 28 points led both teams.
Ceejay Nofuente struggled for the first time this season (6-26 overall, 2-13 from the 3 point line), but she still kicked in 17 points on the night.
Humber will now entertain the Niagara Knights on Wednesday night at home.
