HAWKS WIN IN NOFUENTE’S RECORD SETTING NIGHT

By: E. Garro

ETOBICOKE, ONT -- It was a record setting night at the Hawks Nest, when Ceejay Nofuente (Toronto) shattered two OCAA records for most three pointers made in a game (13) and most points scored (55).

The Humber Hawks (10-0, 1st West) started 2017 on the right foot, defeating the Redeemer Royals (5-5, 6th West) by a final score of 92-62.

The Royals managed to take their biggest lead of the game when they led 4-0 right after tip-off. Humber began the game 0-3 from the field, which led to Redeemer taking the quick lead.

This game was the clash between Humber's Nofuente who is fourth in the OCAA in points-per-game this season with an average of 20.9 and Redeemer's Jesseca Brown (Grand Manan, NB) who is fifth with 20.2. Brown won the West division scoring title last season.

The halftime score was 31-30 in favour of the Hawks who coughed up a double-digit lead just before half. Humber led thanks to Nofuente hitting five three-pointers and finishing the first-half with 19 points.

With Nofuente hitting five three-pointers, she pushed the Hawks streak of at least five threes to 10 games this season. She came out in the second half and drained another three setting the pace for the remainder of the game.

It was late in the third quarter when Nofuente drained her tenth three-pointer to beat the previous record set in 2010. It was late in the fourth quarter when she drained her 13th three giving her 55 points.

After outscoring Redeemer 33-12 in the third quarter, the Hawks had a comfortable lead and allowed the coaching staff to give their bench some time to play. This was important to the coaching staff since the team took part in a holiday break tournament meaning it could give their starters some extra rest.

Redeemer's Brown, finished the game with a team-high 32 points and nine rebounds.

No other Hawks' player finished the game in double-digits, but Miea Campbell-Johnson (Brampton) finished the game with eight points and 11 rebounds. Aleena Domingo (Toronto) chipped in grabbing 10 boards and finishing with four points.

Nofuente finished the game with 55 points and 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double this season.

Humber has now extended their win streak against Redeemer to 37-0, dating back to the 1991-92 OCAA season.

The Hawks will now have over a week off before they play their next game on January 21, when they travel to London to take on the Fanshawe Falcons (7-3, 3rd West). Tip-off is at 5pm.
