HAWKS WIN HOME OPENER OVER FANSHAWE

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's basketball (1-0, 3rd West) program began their season Wednesday night in front of a large crowd at the Humber Athletic Centre.  Their home opener was a rematch of last season's OCAA Championship semi-final with the Fanshawe Falcons (0-1, 9th West).

The Hawks began the game with energy, led by veteran Ceejay Nofuente (Toronto).  The fourth-year point guard scored ten points in the opening frame, helping Humber jump out to an early 20-14 first quarter lead.

With ten new faces on the Humber roster, multiple offensive miscues came into play in the second quarter that slowed the high-octane performance from the opening ten minutes.  Despite the Hawks poor offensive showing, their defence continued to smother Fanshawe, limiting the Falcons to only eight points.  At half, the Hawks went into the locker room up 32-20.

After holding on to their 12-point lead, the Hawks began to lose steam in the fourth, leaving an opening for the Falcons to mount a comeback.  Eight fourth quarter points from Fanshawe's Natalie Warren brought the Falcons within seven points; however Humber would hold on to win 63-56.

After missing last season with an injury, forward Aleena Domingo (Toronto) recorded a double-double after finishing with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds.  Nofuente nearly missed a quadruple-double after finishing with 19 points, 16 rebounds, nine assists, and eight steals.

Prior to the game, a short ceremony was held for head coach Ajay Sharma and Ceejay Nofuente.  Coach Sharma was presented with a ring from Jostens after being named the 2016 CCAA Coach of the Year last season for leading the Hawks to their first national championship title.  Nofuente was also presented a Jostens ring for winning the 2016 CCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Year Award.

The Hawks will now have a week off to prepare for a road game against the Niagara Knights (1-0, 1st West) on Thursday, November 3rd at the Welland Athletic Centre.
