ETOBICOKE, Ont -- What started off as a close game turned into a one-sided victory for the no.1 Humber Hawks women's basketball team (9-0, 1st West) in a 89-64 win over the no. 8 Mohawk Mountaineers (6-3, 3rd West) on Wednesday night.
Humber took advantage of a big night from their starters and a game-high 25-point night from fourth-year point-guard Ceejay Nofuente (Toronto).
The Mountaineers held a very early lead at 7-2 until Humber was able to take over, not giving up the lead for the remainder of the game.
The Hawks were leading at halftime largely in part to Nofuente's big first half which saw her put up 18-points and a team high three rebounds. Amber Bechard (Tecumseh) chipped in with nine points, going three of four from three-point range.
For a stretch in the second half the Hawks shooting had gone cold which saw Mohawk go on an 8-0 run bringing the lead down to 12, but it was as close as they would get.
Fifth-year centre Jill Semple (Etobicoke) had a big second half for the Hawks. She tacked on 12 points and finished the game with a season-high 18. Fourth-year forward Aleena Domingo (Toronto), finished with a 14-point, 10 rebound double-double, her third of the season.
Humber would finish the game shooting 46.7% compared to Mohawks 36.2%. Sam Pocrnic finished with a team-high 20 points for the Mountaineers.
Bechard finished with 13 points, three rebounds along with six assists and was named the "Hawks Nation" player of the game.
Humber now improves to 8-1 over the past nine games against the Mountaineers.
Wednesday night wasn't only a basketball game at the Hawks Nest. Prior to game start, Humber revealed an LGBTQ+ banner that will be placed on display in the main gym. The banner represents Humber athletic's support for the LGBTQ+ community. More information regarding this event can be found here.
With the win Humber heads into the holiday break in first place in the west division at 9-0 and will have a month off before returning to OCAA action on January 11, when they host the Redeemer Royals (4th West, 5-4).
