SWEEP SATURDAY WOULD ENSURE HAWKS HOME GAME IN PLAY-OFFS

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks men's baseball team will enter Saturday's home doubleheader against the Durham Lords holding their own fate in hand, should they wish to secure a home play-off game to start the OCAA Championships in London next week.

A sweep by the Hawks or any a combination of a Fanshawe loss and a single Humber win would give the Hawks the tie-breaker over the Falcons. A home game in the opener at Provincials, especially since the event is being hosted and played on the home of the Falcons in London at Labatt Park, is a benefit.

At 6-12, Durham has all but secured a play-off spot, but will not move up from their fourth place standing even with a sweep of the Hawks. Humber checks in with a mark of 12-6.

Durham and Humber have met twice this year, with the Hawks taking both ends of the doubleheader held at Oshawa's Kinsmen Stadium. The first was a come from behind effort, and the second not close at all. The Lords will face the undefeated St. Clair Saints in the opening game of the OCAA play-offs.

Durham is a very young squad, but features a number of terrific veterans. It has been these veterans that have led the way. Jack Lang leads the way, as he currently sits in second place on the batting leaderboard, with an average of .434. Ilija Bozinovski continues to be a force on the mound and will certainly get innings on Saturday.

Humber's Sean Mattson, a former Junior National team member, continues to be one of the best players in the league. He has been flawless at shortsop and a monster at the plate, hitting at a .432 clip. His 20 RBI's is second best, as he his tied with teammate Ken Hahnfield. All in all, they Hawks have seven players with averages over the magical .300 mark.

The strength of the Hawks has been their mound presence. Veteran James Byrnes leads the way once again, with his league second best ERA of 1.24.

Game times are scheduled for 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm, and will take place at Connorvale Park in Etobicoke.
