HAWKS SPLIT DAY AND SEASON SERIES WITH FANSHAWE

ETOBICOKE, ON — The Humber Hawks and Fanshawe Falcons both entered Sunday's doubleheader ready to play their third and fourth baseball games in 24 hours. Humber was coming off back-to-back tough losses against defending champ St. Clair, while Fanshawe had completed a two-game sweep of Durham at Kinsmen Stadium to pull into a tie with Humber for 2nd place.

In game 1, Humber's first six hitters reached base en route to a 6-run inning. Andreopoulos, Mattson, and Hahnfeld each drove in one, and Len Wood cashed two on a single. The score was 6-1 Humber and it looked like the wheels might come off for the Falcons. But two hit batsmen and a pair of errors in the second led to four Fanshawe runs to close the gap to one.

Humber led 9-5 into the fifth, with starter Cameron Gray settling in after a rough 2nd inning. Gray retired two in the 5th (one when catcher Blake Kauer threw out Chris McQueen at second), but a walk and a hit batter signalled the end of his day. Right-hander Tyler Goertzen came in and struck out Brian Hames to end the threat.

In the 5th Humber once again batted around. Len Wood drove in his third and fourth runs of the game and Kenny Hahnfeld cashed Wood with an RBI single to give Humber a 13-5 stranglehold. Two more runs in the 6th gave Humber the 15-5 victory via the mercy rule.

Game 2 looked like a low-scoring affair early, as starters Andrew Calic and Andrew Blakey allowed just one baserunner each through 2 innings. But with one out in the 3rd, Blakey surrendered a single to number 9 hitter Tristan Buntrock, then walked the next two batters to load the bases. An error brought home Fanshawe's first run, and catcher Mike Ambrose followed with a two-run double to send Fanshawe out in front 3-0.

Humber responded in the 4th. Matt Stoddart laced a two-out double over the head of right fielder Tyson Patrick, scoring Hahnfeld from first. Stoddart moved to third on a wild pitch, and a walk to Colin Gingerich put runners on the corners. Gingerich then coaxed a throw from Falcons catcher Mike Ambrose on a steal of second, and Stoddart came across in the ensuing rundown.

With the score now 3-2, Humber looked for a shutdown inning in the 5th. But five walks and two wild pitches led to four Fanshawe runs, making it a 7-2 Falcons lead. The Hawks responded with two of their own off starter Andrew Calic, but were shut down in the 6th and 7th by righty reliever Kevin Hillsdon, and fell by a score of 7-4. Hawks reliever Lee Mosbaugh looked sharp in relief, striking out the side in the 7th.

The Hawks will visit Seneca on Tuesday night to play a make-up game that was postponed due to rain earlier in the season.

Humber will see their next home action on Wednesday at 7:00 pm, as they host the George Brown Huskies for single game.
