WOOD'S HEROICS SALVAGES HAWKS SPLIT WITH FANSHAWE

LONDON, Ontario: The Humber Hawks men's baseball team have a big weekend ahead of them, starting with a twin bill in London against the Fanshawe Falcons on Friday night. They will then move on to Windsor to play the two-time OCAA champion St. Clair Saints on Saturday.

In game one, the Hawks led early and seemed in full control on their way to their third straight win to open the season, but let the win slide away by allowing the Falcons to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 come-from-behind win. Hawk starter Brandon Catena was outstanding until the fateful seventh, where he gave up two hits, followed by two walks. Tyler Goertzen replaced him and quickly gave up the game winning single. Sean Matson and Kenneth Hahnfeld led the Hawks with two hits each.

Game 2 was the Len Wood and James Byrnes show. These two veterans dominated the game throughout.  In the 10-3 route of the Falcons. Wood had a line that read; 5 at bats, 2 runs, 3 hits and 5 rbi's. In his spree he had a 2 run homer in the first and a bases loaded clearing double in the third. And then he singled and scored in the fifth. Former Junior National team player Sean Mattson continued his torrid pace, with three hits as well. Byrnes has dealing all night, not allowing a hit until the fourth inning. He finished with four innings pitched, a single unearned run against.
