DEFENDING OCAA CHAMPIONS SIGN EMMA HEENEY
ETOBICOKE, ON: The 13-time provincial champion Humber Hawks have signed left side hitter Emma Heeney for the upcoming 2016-17 volleyball season, announced head coach Chris Wilkins. A native of Ingersoll, a small town in southwestern Ontario, Heeney will join the Hawks after competing for the 18U Kitchener-Waterloo Predators.
"We are excited to watch Emma grow into a key member for us over the next four years," said Coach Wilkins, who is entering his 16th season as head coach. "She has a high volleyball IQ and a great background, both of which are direct results of playing for quality clubs like KW Predators and Forest City."
Graduating from Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute, Heeney has played high-caliber volleyball since she was 11 years old. During that span, she has won two national silver medals with her club teams, while grabbing a bronze medal at the Ontario Winter Games.
"She comes from a volleyball family which strengthens her ability and overall skill," added Coach Wilkins. "I think Emma is a player we can use in many roles and I'm eager to help her achieve her academic and athletic goals."
Heeney will be attending the University of Guelph-Humber starting in September.
"I chose Guelph-Humber for the unique collaboration between college and university," said Heeney. "It's a university experience with a small classroom feel and I also get the chance to play for the Humber Hawks volleyball team. I'm very excited for the upcoming season."
Heeney will be enrolling in the Kinesiology program, where after four years she will graduate with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Kinesiology and a diploma in Fitness and Health Promotion.
"I love the opportunity to graduate with a degree and diploma," added Heeney. "This played a major role in my decision to choose Guelph-Humber."
Heeney, along with recruits Breanna Golding (Pickering), Celine Blanchette (St. Catharines) and Julia Watson (Burlington), will join the rest of the Humber Hawks volleyball team when training camp begins in July.
