HAWKS FALL IN CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL 3-0 TO VIU

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI: Dreams of CCAA National Championship gold have gone, but the Hawks will now take the path towards the bronze medal.

The Hawks dropped a 3-0 (27-25, 25-17, 25-16) decision to the VIU Mariners in the 2016 CCAA Women's National Championship semi-final on Friday night. Humber will take to the floor once again on Saturday morning at 9:00 am EST against the host Holland Hurricanes, with the winner advancing to the Bronze Medal Game on Saturday night.

The match started out with the second seeded Hawks on fire, leading early and extending that lead to an almost sure first set win with a 20-12 lead. The VIU squad would not let this happen, outscoring Humber 17-5 the rest of the way to win the set 27-25. The set was not without controversy, as the VIU coach received 2 yellow cards and a delay-of-game warning.

The second set showed the Hawks were going to battle back, and held another significant lead of 13-9. VIU once again answered, going on a 15-3 run before closing out the set 25-17.

Up against the wall in what could be the third and deciding set, it was VIU that ran out to a big lead early. After leading 6-0 and 14-4, the Mariners cruised to a final set win of 25-16.

The one positive for the Hawks was that they served much better and looked comfortable with the new ball. This should help them when they hit the court in the morning.

Devan O'Connor continued to play well and led the Hawks with 8.5 offensive point, on 6 kills, 1 ace and 3 block assists. Alexandra Newman chipped in with 6.5 points.

Setter Brittany Vanderlaan was selected as the Humber Player of the Game.
