HAWKS ADVANCE TO NATIONAL BRONZE MEDAL GAME WITH SWEEP

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI: The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team have advanced to the 2016 CCAA National Women's Volleyball Championship bronze medal game for the third time in four years, after defeating the host Holland Hurricanes in the bronze semi-final on Saturday morning.

The Hawks have been unable to break through for the elusive medal, but the number two seeded Hawks have put themselves in a good position by sweeping the Canes in three straight sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-19). They now have approximately seven hours of rest time leading up to the match. Their opponent has yet to be decided as the two teams from the ACAC will battle later today.

Humber, losers of the championship semi-final on Friday night, were not going to be denied in this match. Although service has remained a problem, the Hawks played brilliantly between the lines. Humber Player of the Game Thalia Hanniman was outstanding, pounding balls consistently all morning for points.

The Hawks were in control the entire first set, and left no doubt that the set and the momentum would swing their way throughout the match.

The second set was much the same, as the Humber side did not allow the hosts to get closer than 4 points throughout the match.

The last set saw Holland storm out of the gate and pull out to a quick 5-0 lead. By the time the score got to 10, the Hawks had pulled even. Strong service off the bench by Kyla Wilkins and Ashleigh Darrach were key contributors to this comeback. Both helped secure big runs for the blue and gold.

"I was pleased by the way we came out and competed this morning", said Hawks head coach Chris Wilkins. "Coming in to today, there was a lot of meaningful volleyball to be played and we wanted to be in the conversation the entire day."

Hanniman led the Hawks in scoring with a game high 12 offensive points, based on 11 kills and 1 block. Middle Alexandra Newman also registered double figures, with 11 points, on 8 kills, 2 aces and a block.

The Bronze Medal game is set for 5:00 pm EST.
