HAWKS FACE FANSHAWE IN 3RD BATTLE OF THE BIRDS

HAWKS FACE FANSHAWE IN 3RD BATTLE OF THE BIRDS

NORTH BAY, ON: The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team will face a familiar foe in the Fanshawe Falcons on Friday night at 8:00 pm, with the winner advancing to the 2016 OCAA Gold Medal game on Saturday.

Humber advanced to the semi-finals by way of a 3-0 victory over the Algonquin Thunder, while the Falcons needed four sets to down the stubborn host Canadore Panthers.

The winner of tonight's game will face winner of the other semi-final on Saturday at 4:00 pm, which pits the Durham Lords against the Niagara Knights. This game is slated for 6:00 pm. The losers will play for bronze at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

As mentioned above, the Hawks and Falcons have met on two occasions earlier this year in West Division play. The Hawks knocked off Fanshawe both times, not allowing the London based team to take a set in either match. The latest game was a late regular season affair in London on February 13.

Each team features a number of standout players. The Hawks have three all-stars, led by first team members Thalia Hanniman and Alexandra Newman. Hawks second year setter Brittany Vanderlaan was selected to the second team. Fanshawe was unable to have any player named to the first team in the West Division, but had two players, Renee McCormick and Carley Nugteren named to the second squad. Nugteren was also named as the West Division rookie of the year.

Statistically speaking, Humber's Hanniman stands above all as the 2015 OCAA scoring champion captured the West scoring title with a mark of 4.6 points per set. Setter Vanderlaan set an all-time assist mark for Humber setters, and kicked in 30 assists in the quarter-finals. Falcons freshman Nugteren led Fansahwe in scoring, as she checked in at 3.3 pps.

The Hawks have many weapons, and if they continue to pass well, Vanderlaan will surely find the open hitter. Fanshawe should quite a resilience in their quarter-final game, and will be looking for a similar effort tonight.

The games will be streamed "LIVE":
