HAWKS SWEEP FANSHAWE TO END REGULAR SEASON ROAD SCHEDULE

By Ashleigh Darrach

LONDON, ON: The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team won another three straight against the Fanshawe Falcons in their last away game of the 2015-2016 regular season.

The last time Humber played Fanshawe left-side hitter Thalia Hanniman had a total of 9 kills over the duration of the match, followed closely by middle Elizabeth Deakin-Poot with 7.

Fanshawe, currently 2nd place in the West Division, is a similar style team to the Hawks in the sense of their offensive approach. Fanshawe is a hard-hitting team much like the Hawks and they serve hard as well as refraining from an abundance of tips and roll shots.

In the first set Humber was very back-and-forth with Fanshawe, until mid-game. With a missed serve by the Hawks, it was questionable how the tone of the game was going to proceed. Coming off the win against Mohawk, the Hawks wanted to work hard this game and feel good about the way they played.

Serve receive struggled in the first set as well, but Humber picked up the slack toward the end of the set and managed to pull away with a final score of 25-17.

The next two sets were flowing much more smoothly for Humber. The team passed well allowing the middle to run consistently and by passing well, giving setter Brittany Vanderlaan various options to run. Alley Newman middle for the Hawks was the kill leader of the match today with a total of 10 kills.

The final score of the second set was 25-13.

Humber came out strong in the third set, things were clicking for the Hawks and Fanshawe  - although making lots of digs, was unable to transition the ball into offense successfully. Humber was ahead until the end of the set when Fanshawe managed to climb back. It was close, but Humber closed out by serving tough and earning their points. The final score was 25-22.

Humber will graduate a few seniors and play their last home game of the season next Wednesday against the Conestoga Condors at Humber.
