HAWKS SENIORS GO OUT WITH A BANG

HAWKS SENIORS GO OUT WITH A BANG

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team celebrated "Seniors Night" first, by honouring the careers of a number of key players and coaches finishing up their career as a Hawk, and then by going on to a dominating 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-13) win over Conestoga.

With the win, the Hawks finish the regular season with a perfect 18-0 record, and now move on to the 2016 OCAA Championships at Canadore College in two weeks. The loss also ended Conestoga's season, as they dropped to a record of 2-16.

Thalia Hanniman, playing in her last home game as a Hawk after an incredible 5-year career which saw her named an All Canadian and OCAA Athlete of the Year Across All Sports, was nothing short of spectacular. She led the team once again in offensive points, this time with 14, but in only 2 sets of work. Her point total included 7 kills and 7 service aces.

Other Hawks leaving the nest left huge impressions as well. Fifth year standout Deborah Mitchell stepped back into the outside hitter role and not only finished the game with a kill, she drove a number of balls that the Condors could only protect themselves from.

Brooke Kinnaird, a fourth year standout, has unofficially officially completed her career. The Hawk coaches, as mentioned in Head Coach Chris Wilkins address to the crowd has not ruled out Brookes return next year. Brooke served the Conestoga squad off the court, registering 7 aces, which included a run of 8 straight points to end the second set. She finished with 12 offensive points on the night.

Kelsey Kovar, a 2015 OCAA All Star, is also completing her fourth year and falls into the same unofficial official category as Brooke. The coaches would love to see Kelsey don a Humber jersey next year. Returning from injury, she played a dual role on the night, both as a Libero and an outside hitter. She delivered 4 kills in a single set.

Finally, longtime player and coach Heather Vandenbrink (Longland) was honoured for her time as a Hawk. She was asked to lead the Hawks on this day as the Head Coach. During her time here, she was a coach on the team that won seven consecutive OCAA titles.

"Every one of these players is special", said Wilkins. "Their contribution to the program goes well beyond that of the banners won at the end of the season."
