DOMINANT SERVING HELPS HUMBER SWEEP CAMBRIAN

By: Shelby Cockhill

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team extended their win streak to eight games Saturday night after a three set victory over Cambrian College – 25-12, 25-14, 25-20.  The Hawks have now won 21 consecutive sets, their longest streak since 2012 where they won 27 straight.

The first set went by fast with Humber dominating all the way.  Cambrian managed to score the first point of the game, however this lead was short-lived as the Hawks came storming back. Every Hawk had their skill and determination on display as the team recorded kill after kill, lighting up the scoreboard. Cambrian, try as they may, could not narrow the gap in the score. CCAA All-Canadian Thalia Hanniman served up four aces in the set, leading Humber to the win 25-12.

The second set, much like the first, had Humber dominating the scoreboard. Cambrian was no match for the onslaught of the Hawks. The Golden Shield were unable to ever get a lead and trailed behind Humber for the entirety of the set. The Hawks' confidence seemed to grow as the set progressed, as each student-athlete put their best foot forward. The set ended with another Hawks victory, 25-14.

Cambrian fought hard in the third set knowing it was their last chance to extend the match and leave with the upset. The Hawks scored the first point and managed to increase that lead throughout the set. Cambrian certainly did not give up easily, hovering close behind and pushing the Hawks hard. Humber fought their way to a victory, winning the set 25-20 and the game 3-0.

The 'Hawks Nation' player of the game was Brooke Kinnaird, a fourth-year hailing from Hamilton, Ontario. The interior design major set a new career-high with five stuffed blocks, surpassing her previous high of four recorded against the Niagara Knights two seasons ago.
Second-year middle blocker Elizabeth Deakin-Poot also set a new personal best in the match.  The Georgetown native finished with five service aces, exceeding her previous best of four, a feat she accomplished on four separate occasions during her career.

With the win, Humber improves to 8-0 on season and remain in a first-place tie with Fanshawe, who has two games in-hand. Cambrian's loss brings their record to a total of six wins and four losses.

Humber will be back on home court tomorrow with a match against Boreal. A win will put the Hawks in sole possession of first place. The match is scheduled to start at 1:00pm at the Humber Athletic Centre. Click the link below to stream the match live tomorrow.
