National Women's Champion Hawks Heading to Spain in August

ETOBICOKE, ON: The 2016 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national champion Humber Hawks women's basketball team will take their game to the international stage, as they will travel to Spain on August 22-31. Along with touring and training in this beautiful country, the Hawks will play a series of three exhibition games against some very talented teams.

"This is such a meaningful trip on many fronts", said Humber Director of Athletics Ray Chateau. "The student-athletes will have the opportunity to experience another culture, and also be able to represent the college on the court in the game they excel at."

Humber will play Sant Adria (Barcelona) and Lima Horta (Barcelona) from the Second Pro league and CTEIB (Centro De Tecnificación Islas Baleares) Basketball Academy (Balearic Islands). The actual dates for these games have not been released.

"We are unsure as to the level of play we will be exposed to," said Hawks head coach Ajay Sharma. "The one thing I know for sure is that the intent is for the players to have an incredible experience on and off the court. We will compete from the opening tip of the opening game, but this trip is about more than just basketball."

The Hawks team will feature a number of players who attained significant individual accolades as the Hawks rolled their way to the CCAA national crown. Point Guard Ceejay Nofuente (Toronto) took every honour available to a collegiate women's basketball player last year, highlighted by Player of the Year and tournament MVP at both provincial and national championships. Post Jillian Semple (Etobicoke) also returns, and is looking to build on her selection to the national championship all-star team.

"Winning the national title and this trip will certainly be the highlights of my basketball career," said third-year guard Amber Bechard (Windsor). "I am so excited to travel abroad with my teammates, and gain even more lasting memories."

The team, which returns at the end of August, will take back to the floor soon afterwards as tryouts for the 2016-17 squad will commence just a short time later in early September. They will be looking to add a third consecutive OCAA provincial crown, and another trip to the CCAA national championships.
