SENIORS NIGHT FRUITFUL FOR FIRST PLACE HAWKS

By Eugenio Garro

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's basketball team used a strong 24-0 run in the opening quarter to continue their perfect season in a dominant 88-31 win against the Sheridan Bruins.

The Hawks, who are the no.2 ranked team in the country, came out flying in the first quarter, hitting shots from everywhere on the court and playing great defence en route to a 24-2 first quarter lead.

Ceejay Nofuente who was one of the Hawks honoured before the game led the way in the first quarter going 3/3 from the field for eight points.

The second quarter featured the Hawks giving their bench players a chance to get in the game and they did well by continuing the domination.

The Bruins had a better second quarter as they put up some points but still struggled to stop Humber's relentless attack.

Humber led at half time by a score of 45-12.

The dominance continued into the third quarter as the Hawks continued to move the ball around really well and made it really hard for the visiting Bruins at both ends of the court.

However, it wasn't all smiles for the Hawks. Starting PG Nofuente went down midway through the third quarter holding her ankle and did not return.

The Hawks took a 69-20 lead heading into the fourth.

The fourth quarter featured the Hawks aiming for the OCAA single season scoring record of 1392. They needed to reach 100 points to break the record.

The Hawks fell short of the record but got the most important thing on the night, which was the win.

"We shot the ball really well," said Hawks head coach Ajay Sharma. "We got a chance to play everybody tonight which was also good."

With the win the Hawks perfect season is still intact improving their record to 17-0.

Hawks C Jillian Semple had quite the night. She was a force at both ends of the court and recorded a double-double with a team high 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Senior Night is a Humber tradition when they honour graduating student-athletes. On this night it was eight members on the women's basketball team. The night began with tears but it did not affect the Hawks at all.

"It was hard for me to not get emotional, I've coached these girls for a while," said Sharma on the ceremony before the game. "They've given their heart and soul for their program and school and it's only right we honour them."

After the game Sharma said that Nofuente had a sprained ankle and would be taken for x-rays for precautionary reasons.

The Hawks next game is next Friday when they travel to take on the Niagara Knights. It will be their final game of the regular season before the OCAA Provincial Championships.
