WEEKEND DOUBLE-HEADER ON TAP FOR No.2 HAWKS

WEEKEND DOUBLE-HEADER ON TAP FOR No.2 HAWKS

SUDBURY, ON: The no.2 program in the country will be heading on the road to play a two-game weekend double-header with the Cambrian Golden Shield (0-9, 10th West).  The Humber Hawks (11-0, 1st West) will be taking the 385 kilometer trek looking to extend their win-streak in conference play to 28 consecutive games.

Less than a week ago, the Hawks were pushed to the brink against no.9 Fanshawe (8-3, 2nd West) and narrowly escaped with the 60-57 win.  After coasting through the game with a comfortable lead, the Falcons outscored Humber by nine points in the fourth quarter, intent on snapping the win-streak.  Fourth-year forward Jillian Semple (Etobicoke) helped lead Humber to the win, finishing with a season-high 20 points and eight rebounds.

The Golden Shield have had a tough time scoring as a team this season, displayed in their league-worst 36.9 points-per-game average.  In their last game before the holiday break, Cambrian lost on the road to Sault College (1-8, 9th West) 77-36, allowing Sault to score a season-high in points as a team.

A bright spot for Cambrian is their second-year guard Karli Marcotte, who is leading the West in scoring, averaging 21.9 ppg.

Since Cambrian joined the OCAA west division in 2013, the Hawks are 4-0 against the Golden Shield.  The last matchup between these teams was in November 2014, a weekend double-header as well.  The Hawks grabbed two quick wins, defeating Cambrian by almost 30 points each game. Llyandra Kerr (Markham) averaged 13 points and 11 rebounds over the two games.

After 11 games, the Hawks are the highest scoring team in the province.  With seven games remaining, Humber has a chance of breaking the OCAA's all-time scoring record that the program previously set in 1998-99.  That season the Hawks went 16-0 before losing to Sheridan in the championship game and finishing fourth at nationals.

First game Saturday, January 23 is set for 6:00PM.  Tip-off on Sunday is scheduled for 12:00PM.
