WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FINISH SEASON FOURTH IN THE COUNTRY
Humber ends their season as provincial champions and as the official fourth place team in the country after a tough loss to the Holland College Hurricanes and their fourth quarter comeback. Ceejay Nofuente put on another valiant display with 21 points shooting 5-for-5 from three point range while forward Llyandra Kerr impacted the paint with 12 points and eight rebounds in the season ending loss.
The Hawks didn't waste any time getting on the board with a short range basket from forward Llyandra Kerr for a 12-4 lead at the four minute mark. Kerr led Humber to own the paint and continued their dominance under the basket with a pair of buckets from forward Aleena Domingo. The Hawks stayed in command and ended the quarter with a 16-9 lead.
The Hurricanes turned on the pressure with a 7-2 run and immediately forced the Hawks into turnover trouble that ended with a handful of points against Humber. By the five minute mark the Hurricanes made it a 20-16 point game with the Hawks in the lead. Guard Ceejay Nofuente righted the ship with a three at the top on the arc then forward Atissa Cronk helped the Hawks regain confidence under the basket with a hardnosed offensive board for a 29-19 lead and a Holland timeout. Nofuente lit up the perimeter with a buzzer beating three giving Humber a handsome 32-21 lead and some energy going into the locker room.
The persistent Hurricanes turned the game around but the Hawks kept taking back the reigns with brief 10 and 12 point leads. But the Hawks got into foul trouble and gave Holland eight trips to the charity stripe to initiate a comeback. By the end of the frame the Hawks were up 50-42 but were running out of steam.
Humber had to deal with the rolling Hurricanes as they quickly chipped away to a two point deficit after another sizable 8-2 run. The Hawks had opportunities at the free throw line were Domingo broke the ice with a pair of free points, but Humber found themselves in a slump and the Hurricanes tied it up at 54 points by the final two minutes and took their first lead of the half a minute later. Down to the wire the Hurricanes didn't look back and while the Hawks tried to return the favour they were shut down during those two minutes and fell 61-54
The Hawks finish the season as the CCAA National fourth place seed.
