HAWKS HIT ROAD FOR BACK-TO-BACK TOUGH TESTS THIS WEEKEND

HAWKS HIT ROAD FOR BACK-TO-BACK TOUGH TESTS THIS WEEKEND

ETOBICOKE, ON: In what is the most lengthy and strenuous road trip of the regular season, the Humber Hawks women's volleyball team (1-0) will travel four hours to Windsor on Saturday for a match-up with the St. Clair Saints (2-0), and then head two hours back this way on Sunday to London to play the Fanshawe Falcons (3-0).

SATURDAY'S MATCH-UP

Humber "Hawks" @ St. Clair "Saints"
Saturday, November 4
6:00 pm
St. Clair College Athletic Centre – Windsor

LAST TIME OUT VS ST. CLAIR

In the same building that will be hosting Saturday's game, the Hawks knocked the Saints out of their run for the 2017 OCAA title on home court with a very tight semi-final 3-0 straight set win (25-11, 27-25, 25-23). In fact, it was the Saints who led all three sets into the upper teens until the Humber squad came roaring back to win the match. Only two players, one from each side, were able to reach double figures in scoring. The Saints Angela Evans recorded 14 offensive points (11 kills, 2 service aces, 1 block), while Humber's Brynne Coleman notched 11 points (9 kills, 2 service aces).

SCOUTING ST. CLAIR

  • Both of the Saints wins this season have come on the road, as they knocked off Mohawk 3-2 and Conestoga 3-0. Although the match against Conestoga was settled in three straight, every set was tight and into the twenties.
  • Returning star middle Hanna Stewart (9 kills, 3 service aces) was the top scorer for St. Clair vs Conestoga
  • The Saints line-up is filled with veteran players, see 12 returnees and only three rookies on their roster
  • 2016/17 leading scorer Kaila Crough (3.5 pps) returns, but St. Clair has lost power hitter Angela Evans (3.2 pps)

SUNDAY'S MATCH-UP

Humber "Hawks" @ Fanshawe "Falcons"
Sunday, November 5
1:00 pm
Fanshawe College Athletic Centre – London

LAST TIME OUT VS FANSHAWE

The Hawks defeated the Falcons in the "Battle of the Birds" on Humber's home court by a score of 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22). This was only one of four sets the Hawks lost all season. Meghan Morelli of Fanshawe was the leading scorer on the night with 19 points, 15 coming via the kill, but she was the only Falcon to reach double digits. Humber had a more balanced attack, with three players eclipsing the 10 point mark, led by Alexandra Newman and her 15 points.

SCOUTING FANSHAWE

  • The Falcons are off to a flying start at 3-0, with all three wins coming on the road and by scores of 3-0. Out of the nine sets played, their opposition was only able to get out of the teens in one set
  • The Falcons boast a balanced line-up of eight returning players and seven freshman
  • As expected, the trio Ainsley Acton and the Morelli sisters – Shannon and Meghan, are the point leaders early in the season, with Acton off to a 4.0 points per set mark
  • Fanshawe were losers in their opening game at the 2017 OCAA Provincials against the silver medalists from Durham, but worked their way back to win the consolation final

HAWK NOTES

  • Humber has only played a single OCAA regular season game to date, a 3-0 whitewash of the Redeemer Royals on home court.
  • The usual suspects led the Hawks on this night, with Bryne Coleman leading the way with 11 points
  • High flying recruit Jasmine Lougheed also turned in a solid night, scoring in all three offensive categories

HISTORY WATCH

  • All eyes will be on head coach Chris Wilkins, as he is just a single victory away from assuming the first place on the Hawks coaching all-time wins list. He is currently tied with the legendary Mike Katz, who led the Hawks basketball team to 318 victories over his 19 year tenure at Humber. Chris's brother Wayne, coach of the Hawks men's team, is eerily close with 316 wins of his own.
  • Humber is currently on a streak of 131 consecutive OCAA league and play-off wins, a record for any sport in OCAA history
