ETOBICOKE, Ont. – Facing off against a team that nearly pushed them to the brink in their last matchup, the Humber Hawks women's volleyball team (13-0, 1st West) were put to the test again against the Mohawk Mountaineers (7-5, 5th West) Friday evening. Overcoming several Mohawk leads, the Hawks fought fiercely to defeat their opponents in three tightly contested sets (25-16, 25-20, 29-27).
Though the Hawks opened the scoring in the first set, the Mountaineers quickly pulled ahead, gaining a three-point lead early. Despite the early deficit, the Hawks soon struck back, stringing together rallies of four and five points from Jasmine Lougheed and Devan O'Connor's serving and retaking the lead. Mohawk responded by narrowing Humber's lead down to two points, but the Hawks' offense took over as they scored five straight points to win the first set in convincing fashion, 25-16.
In the second it was the Mountaineers that struck first, scoring five straight points from excellent serving from Amanda Kuiper to open the set. After Brynne Coleman-Spence broke up the Mountaineers' streak, the Hawks retaliated with their own streak of seven straight points, riding on Celine Blanchette's serving. The Mountaineers immediately struck back with another five-point rally, putting the Hawks behind again. Coleman-Spence would eventually lead the Hawks on their own five-point rally, regaining a lead that they fiercely maintained for the rest of the set, ultimately taking it 25-20.
The third set began in similar fashion to the second, with the Mountaineers taking an early lead, hitting the five-point mark first for the third straight set. The Hawks would grab hold of the lead after a pair of three-point rallies but were unable to build upon it as the Mountaineers stayed right on their heels. Showing their resilience, the Mountaineers used Jordan Geerts's serving to create a four-point rally and tie the set at 23 points apiece. The set would then be forced to go the distance as the Hawks lost the lead at 26-25. Determined to finish off their opponents, the Hawks struck back hard, grabbing hold of the lead again and claiming victory with a 29-27 win, ending the game by taking three straight sets.
Jasmine Lougheed led the Hawks in points with 12 (nine kills, three blocks). Coleman-Spence (seven kills, one serving ace, two blocks) and O'Connor (nine kills, one serving ace) both had ten points. Kyla Wilkins was named the Hawks Nation Player of the Game after the win.
Lindsay Vanderweide led the Mountaineers with eight points (seven kills, one serving ace), while Kuiper finished with four serving aces.
The Hawks improve to 13-0 on the season with the victory, while the Mountaineers drop to 7-5.
Next up for the Hawks are the Redeemer Royals (3-10, 8th West) in a road matchup on Feb. 2. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
