ETOBICOKE, Ont -- A superb performance from Breanna Golding was the fire igniting the Hawks' offence Sunday afternoon, as the Humber Hawks women's volleyball team (10-0, 1st West) overcame the St. Clair Saints (7-4, 4th West) at home in three sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-20).
After beginning the first set with a 5-1 lead, the Hawks found themselves fighting to keep it as the Saints retaliated fiercely. Erasing several Humber attempts to build a lead, the Saints continually matched the Hawks, even taking the lead partway through at 14-13. However, the Hawks regained control of the set and eventually closed it out with four straight points to take it 25-19. Breanna Golding took charge in the first set, scoring four kills.
The Hawks began the second set by falling behind after a three-point Saints start, but quickly recaptured the lead. After scoring five straight points on the back of Golding's serving, the Hawks led 13-6 halfway through the set and never looked back. Maintaining their lead, the Hawks would take the second set 25-17, with Golding scoring four additional kills and two serving aces.
The third set was closely matched from the start, with the Hawks taking a three-point lead before a four-point rally fuelled by the Saints' Taylor Fitzgerald put St. Clair ahead. Humber responded immediately with a five-point rally led by Julia Watson, taking a solid lead and holding it through the remainder of the game. While the Saints fought to come back, the Hawks triumphed in the third set 25-20, winning the game in three straight.
Golding would finish the game with an incredible 19 points (14 kills, three serving aces, two blocks), her second highest point total of the season. Golding was named the Hawks Nation Player of the Game after the victory.
Julia Watson (six kills, two serving aces) and Devan O'Connor (six kills, two blocks) both had eight points for the Hawks. Kaila Crough of the Saints led her team with nine points (seven kills, two serving aces).
The Hawks improve to 10-0 on the season with the victory, retaking first place in the western division standings. The Saints drop to a 7-4 record with the loss.
Up next for Humber is a matchup on the road against the Niagara Knights (7-3, 3rd West), scheduled for 6:00 pm Thursday evening.
