YEAR IN REVIEW: HAWKS MAKE IT 11 CONSECUTIVE OCAA TITLE WINS
The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team continue to raise the bar in OCAA play, by winning their eleventh straight OCAA championship and extending their record OCAA winning streak to 152 games.
Once again, the Hawks entered play as the team to beat in OCAA women's volleyball. Credit head coach Chris Wilkins, as with a much different looking line-up, he led the team to their seventh straight undefeated regular season. Wilkins achieved a significant milestone himself, as he took over the all-times wins lead over the legendary men's basketball coach Mike Katz, and he now sits with 341 wins. The regular season was not without its heart wrenching games. Mohawk held a 2-0 set lead and a 17-12 third set margin in the fourth game of the year, but Humber rallied in the third and two the next two sets to win the match and keep the streak alive.
Post-season awards were plenty for Humber, and second-year sensation Breanna Golding led the way, as she was named an All-Canadian. Kyla Wilkins also snared a spot on the West Division First Team All-Star squad.
The first round of the playoffs brought a rematch with the Mohawk Mountaineers. Once again, Humber found themselves down 2-0 in sets and losing 21-20 in the third, before rebounding to take the match in five sets. The semi-final was just as challenging, with Humber knocking off St. Clair in four. The gold medal game saw the Hawks leave no doubt as to who the top team in the OCAA was, as they defeated Niagara in straight sets. This included the best set of the year for Humber, a 25-7 drubbing in the second set.
Breanna Golding was again recognized, this time as the championship MVP. Wilkins joined her again, snaring championship all-star honours.
After Golding received her All-Canadian award on the Wednesday night at the CCAA championships in Grande Prairie, AL, the Hawks took to the floor on the Thursday. Humber was forced to battle back from 2-0 down to FX Garneau (RESQ – Quebec) to win in five and advance to the championship semi-finals. In the best game of the entire event, Humber lost in four grueling sets to Douglas College (PACWEST – BC). After a win over MSVU (ACAC – Atlantic), the tired group dropped the national bronze game to Lakeland (ACAC – Alberta).
Brynne Coleman was a CCAA championship first team all-star, while Golding was given a second team nod.
