ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team (18-0, 1st West), despite a bit of a setback during the third set, rallied together to defeat their top competitor the Fanshawe Falcons (14-4 2nd West) Wednesday evening in three straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-21).
The first match the Hawks took the lead with four points separating them from the Falcons until the Falcons gained possession of the ball and came back with three straight points to make the match a one-point difference. Half way through the tables turned and the Hawks lead the rest of the match with at least a five-point difference. Alex Bartman was up to serve for the remainder of the set. The first set was finished off when the ball went out of play and was last touched by the Falcons, the final set 25-19.
The start of the second half started with a rally in which the Falcons hit it out of play for the Hawks to claim the first point. After the Hawks took a four-point lead. With a quick turn over after the Hawks put the ball out of play, they gained repossession once there was a net violation for the Falcons. Before long the match was tied 12-12, and once Devon O'Conner set up to serve, she brought the girls back to leading. After five-straight points off Nicole Collard's serving the Hawks reclaimed the control. The Hawks did not light up towards the end, now with a seven-point lead, a net violation ended the game for the Falcons with the end set being 25-17.
For the third set the Falcons came back hard and forced the Hawks to pay close attention to their every move. Once the Falcons pulled a little bit a head of the Hawks the Falcons had a three-point lead. Tables started to turn when O'Conner was quick to react on a play to lower the point difference. But started to fall behind and gave the Falcons a five-point lead. It wasn't until the Hawks tied the game at a score of 18-18 when Trinity Loughheed came up to serve. Followed by Breanna Golding to be the last to serve. Despite a final push from the Falcons, the Hawks would hang on to win the third set 25-21, taking the game in three straight sets.
Brenna Golding and Nicole Collard led the Hawks with 10 points each. Brynne Coleman had nine points and Devan O'Conner had eight points.
Meghan Morelli led the Falcons in points with a total of eight, while Darian Gropp six points.
The Hawks record improves to 18-0 with the victory. The Falcons loss drops their record to 14-4.
Humber will now host the La Cite Coyotes at home on Saturday afternoon in a crossover playoff game. The first serve is set for 12:00 noon, and with all Hawk home games, it can be seen live on HSN - Hawks Sports Network.
