HAWKS STAY PERFECT WITH SEASON SWEEP OVER NIAGARA

ETOBICOKE, Ontario: In a battle between two top teams, the Humber Hawks Men's soccer team hosted the Niagara Knights Tuesday afternoon at Centennial Park Stadium.

The Hawks and Knights battled it out on opening day with Humber taking that match by a score of 2-0. The score line for that match didn't reflect the quality of the game as the Hawks dominated the match.

With the Knights trailing the undefeated Hawks by five points in the standings, this game had the ingredients of what it took to be a high intensity match up. It however didn't shape up to be that way on a cold wet afternoon.

Right from the opening whistle the Hawks came out with urgency, as they knew what was at stake in this match. Like many of their last matches, they barely allowed the opposition to get out of their own zone whether it was intercepting passes or great ball movement.

It didn't take long for the Hawks to get on the board with the way they were playing early on. It was the Polish connection who got the Hawks on the board early after defender Michael Krzeminski found rookie winger Patrick Majcher who put home a beautiful shot from 25 yards out to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

It wasn't long after that when winger Jesse Assing followed suit and also scored a beautiful shot from range to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

The finish of the day however went to defender Michael Krzeminski who upped both his teammates and scored on a beautiful left footed shot from distance, going bar-down for a 3-0 lead.

With the cold and wet weather conditions both teams retreated to their change rooms at half with the score being 3-0.

The second half began with the Hawks applying more pressure, never allowing Niagara to really get set and move the ball around.

The Hawks would extend their lead midway through the half when striker Jaineil Hoilett went racing down the wing before cutting in and hammering it home for a 4-0 lead.

On this day the Hawks were overall just the better team on both sides of the ball. Niagara struggled to keep up with Humber's ball movement, while the Hawks simply came out harder and evidently got the result they deserved.

Niagara were able to produce a few chances but were unable to beat Hawks goalkeeper Eugenio Garro who recorded the shutout.

With the win the Hawks now improve to 5-0-0 on the year, good enough for first place in the central division and first place overall in the province of Ontario.

Earlier in the day the CCAA released their newest rankings with the Hawks being named the second top team in the country, moving up from their previous ranking at no.5.

The Hawks next match is this Saturday when they are the visitors against the George Brown Huskies at 3:00 p.m. The game will be played at Centennial Park Stadium.
