Women's Recap

Hawks and Sting fail to score in 0-0 tie

The Humber Hawks womens soccer team were in tough Sunday afternoon when they travelled to take on the Seneca Sting.

The two teams didn't meet in the regular season but met in the playoffs last season. With the new divisions put in place this season the two teams find themselves playing each other twice, in what should be a battle for first place in both matchups.

In last season's semi-final matchup, Seneca took it by a score of 3-2.

Returning Hawks players came into Sundays match with last seasons disappointing ending at the back of their minds. It was important that those veteran players took the lead on the afternoon, especially with many first years on the roster.

Both teams won their opening games of the season and knew how important this game was for the standings, especially with the new divisions in place.

There wasn't much going on in the first half of the game. Humber did control most of the play and generated majority of the scoring chances.

Both teams went into the change room at half with the score being 0-0.

The game remained scoreless in the second half of the game with Humber continuing to control the play. Seneca also answered with a few chances of their own but they failed to even hit the target.

The second half didn't provide as many chances as both teams for the most part struggled to break their opponents defensive line.

The two best chances in the game fell to Humbers #2 Alora Walcott but they failed to find the net just pushing them wide.

The final score in this one was 0-0 with both teams failing to break the deadlock.

On a positive note for the Hawks, striker #14 Alexandria Kastanis returned to the starting line-up after sitting out week one with an ankle injury.

Goaltender Tania Serafino earned the shutout.

The Hawks next game comes on Tuesday, Sept 22 when they take on rivals the Sheridan Bruins in the Hawks home opener at Centennial Park Stadium. Kick-off is at 6:30 P.M.ET.

Men's Recap

Hawks Roll Over Sting with 5-2 win

The Humber Hawks Mens soccer team looked to continue their winning ways against the Seneca Sting on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams took their opening matches of the season and knew the importance of this game.

The two teams did not meet last season but have met in big games over the past few seasons with Humber defeating the Sting on those occasions.

The Hawks came out flying in this game and opened the score early in the third minute. The ball was crossed in to the back post and Hawks rookie #22 Sonan Askndar finished it off to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

The attack didn't let up as the Hawks kept bringing the heat. The Sting goalie made some big saves early keeping his team in the game.

Humber was awarded a penalty shot in the 32nd minute after striker #19 Jaineil Hoilett was taken down in the box. He calmly stepped up and fired it into the top right corner for a 2-0 lead.

Just before halftime the Hawks looked to put the game away when they capitalized on a costly error by the Stings keeper and his defender. It was Hawks striker #18 Michael Aigbokie who tapped the ball in for an easy finish and Humber went into halftime with a 3-0 lead.

Humber came out in the second half looking to add to their lead but had many of their efforts turned away but not for long.

Humber added to their lead in the 55th minute when striker Michael Aigbokie potted his second of the game to make it 4-0. Just a few minutes later Jaineil Hoilett added his second of the game with a beautiful curling shot into the bottom corner to make it 5-0.

Seneca was finally able to get on the board in the 60th minute via penalty kick. Humber rookie goalkeeper Karman Singh guessed the right way but the shot was just out of his reach.

Late in the second half, the Sting were able to find a loose ball in the 18-yard-box and were able to put it home to make it a 5-2 game. That would be as close as they would get as the final score in this one was 5-2.

The next meeting between these two teams is Tues, Oct 6.
