HAWKS KEEP PERFECT RECORD INTACT WITH 1-0 WIN OVER SHERIDAN

ETOBICOKE, Ontario: Tuesday nights home opener was more than just a game between rivals, it was a battle for first place in the El Classico of college soccer.

The Humber Hawks mens soccer team hosted their rivals the Sheridan Bruins in the Hawks home opener. It was the teams first game at their new home Centennial Park Stadium and the first of a double-header with the girls playing right after.

This game featured the past two National Champions over the past three seasons with Humber winning in 2012 and 2013, and Sheridan winning last year.

In the only meeting between the two teams last season, they played to a 1-1 draw.

Right from the opening whistle, Humber provided high pressure and barely allowing Sheridan to exit their half causing multiple turnovers. It wasn't until midway through the first-half Humber was able to break the deadlock after Humber striker Jaineil Hoilett swung a great ball to the top of the box and midfielder Gerardo Magno calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner for a 1-0 lead. It was the fourth-year veterans first goal as a Hawk and it couldn't of come at a better time.

It wasn't until the end of the first half Sheridan gained momentum but with the Hawks playing great defense, the Bruins failed to even get a shot on target. The score line would stay the same for the remainder of the half.

The second half featured the Bruins jumping out and dominating much like the Hawks did in the first half. However Humbers defense did not let up and continued to play solid not allowing a single Bruin to break through the line.

Sheridan kept coming in waves but the Hawks back line continued to play solid. Player of the game Kingsley Boasiako and his centre-back Kasra Dehdezi led the way defensively and it rubbed off on the rest of the team.

Humber failed to put the game away after numerous chances off the counter-attack thanks to the Sheridan goalkeeper who was solid for his team on the afternoon.

The score would stay the same for the remainder of the game as Humber would take this one by a score of 1-0 and taking the first game of two between the rivals.

Eugenio Garro would record the shutout for the Hawks with the help of his teammates who were solid on the back end.

The Hawks record improves to 3-0-0 on the season and sit in first place in their division. Their next game comes this Sunday against the University of Toronto Mississauga who is a new team in the OCAA this season.

The Hawks would like to send their best wishes and a speedy recovery to teammate Jordan Piccinin who suffered a broken ankle in an exhibition game earlier in the week. He underwent a successful surgery and will miss the remainder of the season. He is a big loss for this line-up and his size and skill will surely be missed. His no.10 shirt will remain vacant and will be waiting for him once he has returned to full strength.
