JEROME SMITH - MALE FRESHMAN ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
ETOBICOKE, ON: It is said that defence wins championships, and that adage comes into play when talking about the Humber Hawks. In 16 league and playoff games, Humber gave up only five goals against.
One of the key reasons for this staunch defence is the play of freshman sensation Jerome Smith. Smith, a 6'1" standout from Bolton made his presence felt from the first time he stepped on the pitch at Humber.
He was challenged to defend the best players from the teams in the West, the OCAA provincial and then CCAA national championships. Not only did he use his sheer size and strength to force players outside the scoring zone, he was key in transitioning balls forward.
At years end, he was selected to the OCAA West Division All-Star team.
