HAWKS QUEST TO NATIONAL TITLE IN FORT MCMURRAY
FORT MCMURRAY, AB: The undefeated Humber men's soccer team will look to defend their national championship title next week at the 2016 CCAA Men's Soccer National Championship tournament hosted by Keyano College.
The Hawks proved why they are the No. 1 ranked team in the CCAA last weekend when they swept the OCAA provincial championship with an impressive 4-0 win over the Algonquin Thunder in the gold medal match.
Along with the gold hardware, Humber was decorated with an outstanding 14 individual awards at the OCAA men's soccer championship breakfast banquet banquet on October 28. Marcos Nunes (Brampton) took the cake as he was awarded the prestigious 2016 OCAA Player of the Year. Along with Nunes, six other members of the Hawks squad were recognized as Central Division All-Stars and Head Coach Michael Aquino was honored as Central Division Coach of the Year.
The Hawks men's soccer program has a total of five national championship titles, one behind Capilano University who have a total of six. Last year, Humber made history as they defeated the Capilano Blues in a shoot out with only nine men on the field. This would be the Hawks' third CCAA gold medal in four years.
Humber's 13-0 record remains perfect going into the CCAA national tournament. Their first battle will be against SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) Trojans from the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association (ACAC).
The Trojans come into the CCAA tournament with a 8-2 regular season record and a silver medal as they fell short to Keyano College (9-1) in the 2016 ACAC Men's Soccer Championship final in overtime. ACAC Rookie of the Year was awarded to SAIT's Willaim Aiko (Nairobi, Kenya), who scored six goals and remained the Trojan's leading goal scorer.
The game will begin at 12:00 noon (EST), at the newly built SMS Equipment Stadium at Shell Place in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
