HAWKS ROMP OVER MOUNTAINEERS ON THEIR WAY TO SEMI FINALS

ANCASTER, ON: Aided by a second minute own goal by the Mohawk Mountaineers, the Humber Hawks rolled to a 6-1 win in OCAA quarterfinal action on Thursday night in Ancaster.

With the win, the Hawks will face the George Brown Huskies on Friday night at 5:00 pm for the right to play for OCAA gold and a trip to the CCAA National Championship tournament.

After the misfortune by the Mountaineers early in the first half, the Hawks jumped on the Hamilton squad just a few minutes later to pad the score to 2-0. This time it was a strike from the OCAA Player of the Year, Marcos Nunes. Play remained even the rest of the opening 45 minutes, and sat at 2-0 Hawks at the half.

Forced to press forward, Mohawk was unable to control the Hawks counter attacks, and Humber ran off three more goals. Patrick Majcher scored just a minute in to run the score to 3-0. Gianlucas Scorzafave and Joe Tituana added markers at the 60th and 65th minute, respectively.

Mohawk scored at the 75th minute mark to break the shutout, but it was too little, too late.

Just as time was to expire, Jordan Piccinin finished the scoring with a strike from seven yards out.

Karman Singh played the first half for the Hawks, and did not allow a goal. Former 2-time CCAA MVP Eugenio Garro returned from injury to play the second half. He did surrender the only Mountaineer goal, but was outstanding in stopping a Mohawk breakaway.

The Humber Hawk Player of the Game was defender Jerome Smith. Smith was honoured earlier in the day as an OCAA Central Division All Star.

Mohawk will now join three other teams that will vie for fifth, while Algonquin and Niagara will battle in the other championship semi-final.
