HAWKS LOSE TO MOHAWK; FALL TO 9-7

By: Natalie Stoberman

The Hawks dropped their second straight match, this time to the Mohawk Mountaineers in straight sets 22-25, 21-25 and 15-25. Clayton Blanchette had the team of high nine kills in the match.

Humber stayed close for most of the match and exchanged leads with the third ranked Mountaineers. Blanchette led the Hawks on offence with four kills for the Blue and Gold to take a 19-16 lead. Mohawk put their foot down and pulled ahead within a pair of points but left side Hayden McIntyre flew up for a timely kill to make it a one point game with the end of the set in sight. Unfortunately it was a number of unforced errors that gave the 25-22 win to the Mountaineers.

The Hawks had a solid start but couldn't eclipse Mohawk's swagger on the court. Their confidence was at an all-time high despite Humber's flashes of high octane offence. Libero Michael Majcen was the catalyst for most plays with his crisp passing from the backcourt. Mohawk still played a stronger game than the Hawks and took a 2-0 lead in the match by winning the set 25-21.

Humber ran out of gas in the final set. The Mountaineers strongly closed out the match with a 25-15 win to seal the deal with a three set sweep. The Hawks are back in action on Feb. 13 when they take on the Fanshawe Falcons in London.
