HAWKS STRUGGLE FOR CONSISTENCY IN ROAD LOSS

By Ashleigh Darrach

HAMILTON, ON: The Humber men's volleyball team fell 3-0 to the Mohawk Mountaineers on November 14, 2015.

The Hawks, currently ranked 5th in the West division, were close with the undefeated Mountaineers during each set, but struggled to close out.

Nathan Murdock was the top scorer for the Hawks with a match-total of 13 points.

"I was getting a lot of good angles and shots," said Murdock. "I could have done better though, I got blocked a lot."

The Hawks dropped the first set 25-21.

The second set was a battle back and forth for the Hawks and the Mountaineers.

Despite being up a substantial amount, and both team pushing to take the victory, the final score was 30-28 for Mohawk.

"We have to close out. We were up 21-17 but we couldn't execute on offense." Said the Hawk's middle Jordan Darlington.

Humber served well during the second set, but were unable to put the ball away at the net, allowing Mohawk to creep back in.

Clayton Blanchette had 15 serves during the game, and 4 aces out of those serves, meaning that his serve resulted in a point for Humber 26.67% of the time.

"We didn't put many balls in the net, any misses we had were out the back," said Blanchette. "It gives us a better chance when the serves are over, because it may go off the other team's hands."

Humber came back in the third set, and started off with a lead.

The Hawks defense however, allowed Mohawk to catch up.

"We struggled to maintain that lead, we were up in the third, and we blew it," said Murdock.

The Hawks struggled to pass, and Mohawk's 7'2" middle proved as a threat as many hitters got blocked during the third set.

Humber will play the third place Niagara College's team who is 5-1 so far during the regular season. The game is slated at home on November 19, 2015 at home.
