HAWKS WIN SECOND FIVE-SET NAILBITER THIS WEEK

HAWKS WIN SECOND FIVE-SET NAILBITER THIS WEEK

By: Ashleigh Darrach

WINDSOR, ON: Once again, the Humber College men's volleyball team took the long route to capture a victory.  The Hawks alternated wins with the St. Clair Saints and came away victorious in their five set nail-biter in Windsor on November 22, 2015.

The game displayed character from both teams as it was very back and forth.

Hawk's Nathan Murdock displayed his high volleyball IQ throughout the match. Missing their starting right side, the freshman from Mississauga stepped up in the absence and was very successful. Murdock finished the match with 38 points, a new career-high.

The flow of game was very exciting to watch as both teams were diving across their courts to ensure the ball didn't drop on their side.  On the road and in front of a large and rowdy cloud, the Hawks were able to steal set one 25-23.

The Hawk's errors in the second set had the team scrambling to rally from behind but by the time momentum started going their way again, St. Clair pulled out the win 25-23.

Serving errors for the Hawks were detrimental during the third set, as they missed three consecutive attempts in the middle.  Humber regained focus as the set progressed as they improved their passing, allowing for better execution. The third set was taken by Humber at a final score of 25-23.

During the fourth set, Humber was transitioning the ball sound; however St. Clair was playing impeccable defence.   Joey Laporte, St. Clair's setter, displayed his tremendous defensive skills against Murdock's attacks. Laporte has just 20 digs so far this regular season but had multiple digs during the set where the Saints won 25-20.

For the second-time in less than four days, the Hawks found themselves playing in a match that went five sets.  Hawks setter Simon Smyth, playing in his first season, went on a serving run and set very well in the fifth set. Smyth has 192 assists and is currently ranked 5th in the league. Smyth and the Hawks won the fifth set 15-8 and took the match 3-2.

The win improves the Hawks to 5-2 on the season and moves them into fifth place in the competitive OCAA west division.
