WOMEN'S SOCCER SIGNS TOP RECRUIT
ETOBICOKE, Ont -- The Humber Hawks women's soccer program made waves this week when they inked Dominika Philip, one of the top recruits in the province, to a letter of intent.
Philip, a Mississauga, Ontario native, will don the blue and gold this fall with plenty of experience under her belt. Chosen to compete for the U14 provincial team in 2014, Philip became a highly touted recruit across North America. Currently, she is a captain for the Toronto Blizzard Soccer club, a high-performance team that competes against numerous NCAA DI programs.
"Dominika was a highly regarded and recruited student-athlete in both the Canadian and U.S. soccer circuit," said Mauro Ongaro, who owns an 188-48-27 (.766) record in 21 seasons as the co-head coach for Humber soccer. "We are extremely pleased and excited that Dom decided to choose our program. She is not only an exceptional player who will make an immediate impact on our team and league but more importantly, she is a remarkable young lady. We look forward to having her be part of the Hawks Family for years to come."
Graduating from Meadowvale Secondary School, Philip will be taking Humber's Interior Decorating diploma program.
"There were a few reasons why I chose Humber College," said Philip. "Great diversity, great people, and a warm and welcoming environment, just to name a few. [Humber] also features an excellent Interior Decorating and Design Program."
A standout for the Meadowvale Falcons soccer team, Philip demonstrated that her athleticism could help her dominate off the soccer pitch as well; as she was also the captain of the Falcons' volleyball team. In 2014, she set a new school record in the 200-metre dash.
Family is important to Philip, who admitted her parents were very supportive of her throughout her career and with her decision to choose Humber College.
"My parents have done so much for me and have given me the support and resources needed to succeed," added Philip. "My sister also plays high-level hockey, resulting in their lives being consumed by sports; yet they are always around to support us. I could not have taken this journey without them."
Philip and the rest of the Humber women's soccer program will return to the pitch on August 15 for the first day of tryouts. Further information regarding tryouts can be found here.
