WOMEN’S SOCCER WINS BIG AT OCAA ATHLETICS BANQUET

AMHERSTBERG, ON: The Humber Hawks women's soccer team dominated all season long on the pitch and to no surprise, they dominated off the court at the 2016 OCAA Women's Soccer Athletic Awards Banquet Wednesday night.

After winning seven games for the third consecutive season, four student-athletes and both head coaches left the ceremony with six combined awards.

Headlining the evening was Hayley Mackie (Waterloo), who was named the Central Division Rookie of the Year, becoming the first Hawk to receive the honour since Keyla Moreno in 2008.

For the second consecutive season, head coaches Mauro Ongaro and Vince Pileggi have won the Central Division Coach of the Year award. Over the last five seasons, the coaches have amassed a 33-5-6 OCAA regular season record.

Including Mackie, the Hawks had four freshman student-athletes selected as all-stars.  Goalkeeper Vanessa Fiore (Brampton), who finished the season 6-0-2 while recording four clean sheets, Rebecca Spratt (Mississauga), who finished with a team-high seven goals, 11th most in the OCAA and Stephanie Gutierrez (Toronto) were also named all-stars for Humber.

Humber has now accumulated 44 all-star selections since 1996.

The end of the banquet marks the beginning of the 2016 OCAA Championship, which is being hosted by St. Clair college.  The quarter-final matchup for the Hawks will be against the Saints and game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Libro Credit Union Centre in Amherstburg, Ontario.
