HAWKS REMAIN ON TOP

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Hawks women's soccer team (5-0-1, 1st OCAA Central Division) hosted the UTM Eagles (0-4-1, 6th OCAA Central Division) Tuesday evening at Centennial Park Stadium in game that caught the Hawks on their heels.

The first goal was early on from the Eagles and a result of a penalty just outside the Hawks 18-yard box. A direct shot on goal that seemed to float into the net set Humber behind by one.

With some momentum, Humber stepped up their game and started to attack more and more. Strategically, UTM's defence played a high line and the offside-trap, which caught the Hawks multiple times causing them to turn the play over.

Finally, a beautiful cross in from a free kick rebounded and found the head of Shaniece Bennett (Toronto) and then the back of the net. This seemed to cause another spark and the Hawks continued to press.

The second goal for Humber came from Hayley Mackie (Waterloo) when she took a shot from 30 yards out that hit the crossbar and into goal.

As the second half began the play was back and forth between the two teams and not one was able to obtain full possession. This remained through the next 45 minutes and the second half was scoreless.  A 2-1 win for the Hawks who remain first in the OCAA central division.

Next, the Hawks hit the road to take on the Niagara Knights at Youngs Sportsplex in Welland, Ontario Saturday afternoon.
