HAWKS ROOKIES SHINE IN 4-0 WIN

By: Eugenio Garro

It was the rookies who stole the show Tuesday night for the Humber Hawks women's soccer team who defeated the George Brown Huskies by a score of 4-0.

Humber came out flying in the first half setting a quick tempo that their opponents struggled to match. Quick passes, high pressure and a few shots on target had George Brown on their heels and holding on in desperation in the opening minutes.

The Hawks did a great job shutting down the Huskies every movement, forcing them to kick it away and allowing themselves to build from the back and move forward.
Humber was awarded for their efforts in the 13th minute when first-year midfielder Giulia Zanardi(Tottenham) hit a great strike from 25 yards out into to the top left corner to put the Hawks up 1-0.

Passes were constantly picked off by the Hawks and they once again made the Huskies pay for their mistakes in the 27th minute when first-year forward Zoe Longsworth (Toronto) chipped the keeper from close range to push the lead to two.

Longsworth wasn't done there as she extended Humber's lead to three just before halftime, collecting a through ball and calmly sliding it past the George Brown keeper.

What was so important in this game was how Humber was able to take the early lead and give their bench players a chance to see the field. Humber's team this season is built of mostly first-year students but they came out and played like veterans.

The second half of the game was much like the first. Humber continued to move the ball around and really gave George Brown no chance to climb back into the game.
Rebecca Spratt (Mississauga), a first-year recruit and also sister to fourth-year defender Rachel Spratt (Mississauga), scored the fourth and final goal of the game in what was a 4-0 win.

Vanessa Fiore (Brampton) and Taylor Sytsma (Mississauga) combined to record the clean sheet for Humber.

The start is a positive one for the Hawks who are looking to finish on top of the central division once again. They turn their sights to this Sunday when they travel to take on the University of Toronto-Mississauga.

Kick-off in that game is 1 p.m. ET.
