WEARY HAWKS DROP GOLD MEDAL GAME 3-1 TO ALGONQUIN

AMHERSTBURG, ON: The Humber Hawks women's soccer team turned a number of heads on their way to the 2016 OCAA silver medal, but ran out of gas in the title game, as the defending champion Algonquin Thunder stormed to a 3-1 victory.

The Hawks defeated the host St. Clair Saints to open the championship event, and then needed overtime and a shootout to beat the Central Division champion Seneca Sting.

Size and experience came into play in the gold medal game, with the Thunder having an abundance of both.

The Thunder scored early and tacked on as the first half moved on, leading Humber by a score of 3-0 at the break. Humber did have a couple of chances, but a scramble in the Algonquin crease went unrewarded and a Guila Zanardi free kick rang off the crossbar.

The second half saw Humber attacking the entire time. They were rewarded when Zanardi pumped a free kick into the top of the net from 30 yards out. But that was as close as the Hawks could get.

Mikaela Zeballos was selected as the Humber Player of the Game.

Hayley Mackie and Vanessa Fiore were honoured as OCAA Championship All Stars.

A grand effort for the freshman laden Hawks. Congratulations!!
