KITCHENER, Ont -- The Humber Hawks women's soccer (2-0, 1st Central) team picked up right where they left off on Wednesday night, topping the Conestoga Condors (1-1, 3rd Central) by a final score of 4-1.
Hawks midfielder Giulia Zanardi is making a strong case for OCAA Player of the Year, as she continued her hot start to the season with two goals. The second year now has a total of six goals in just two games.
As for the remainder of the match the Hawks controlled the play from beginning to the end. Their ball movement along with quick runs and ability to shut down the opponent were too much for the Condors to handle.
The Hawks defensively are one of if not the best there is. A mixture of veterans and young players has proven to worked for Humber. The back line is anchored by two fifth-year veterans Alexandra Giannone and Rachel Spratt, while goalkeeper Vanessa Fiore has shown she is more than capable to handle the pressure.
Conestoga did, however, find the back of the net off of a free-kick after some sloppy play in the back, making Humber pay for one of their few mistakes.
First-year forward Victoria Rodrigues added to her goal tally this season after some nifty moves sent the defenders and goalkeeper running in circles. Danielle Canhoto, a first-year midfielder, scored her first goal as a Hawk with a hard strike from distance.
Although it is early on in the season, the Hawks have emerged as an early season favourite to compete for provincial gold. Last season, the young Hawks squad took home silver after falling just short of OCAA powerhouse the Algonquin Thunder.
This weekend Humber will travel north to Sudbury to take on the Cambrian Golden Shield (1-0, 2nd Central).
