HAWKS OPEN 2017 REGULAR SEASON ON THE ROAD SUNDAY AT UTM

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's soccer team, winners last year of OCAA outdoor silver and indoor gold, will look to build on a successful campaign that featured a roster chalk full of rookies. This season, with a year under their belts, should prove fruitful. Humber will open on the road this coming Sunday, as they travel to Mississauga for their season opener against the University of Toronto – Mississauga Eagles.

The Match Up
Sunday, September 10/17
1:00 pm
UTM – South Field
Mississauga

Last Season vs UTM

In an unusual blip in the schedule, the two squads played both matches against each other over a nine day stretch. Humber took both games, but the second was a much closer game than expected. In the first match, an away game at UTM, Humber rolled to an easy 7-1 win. At home, the visiting Eagles did not go away so easily, dropping a very tight game by a score of 2-1. Six different Hawk players got involved in the scoring, with the Hawks Shaniece Bennett being the only player to score in both tilts.

UTM is only two seasons into OCAA play, and have yet to win or tie the Hawks.

Scouting UTM

  • The Eagles did not win a league game last year, finishing in last place in the Central Division with a mark of 0-9-1
  • Vanessa Cesario was the team's leading scorer, with four goals in the ten games she played in
  • Their nine goals as a team was not low in the division, as George Brown scored only seven
  • They have added heralded recruits Janet Juseniovski (Woodbridge Strikers) and Ruth Rivkin (University of Guelph)
  • The Eagles have a new coaching staff, led by head coach Damian Yearwood. Former Humber Hawk star Sonia Rocha has also joined the staff as the main assistant.

Hawk Notes

  • Humber finished second in the Central Division (7-1-2), before elevating their game even more in the play-offs, on their way to the OCAA silver medal
  • They recorded an impressive +19, scoring 25 goals, while surrendering only 6
  • Rookie sensation Rebecca Spratt led an impressive group of rookies with a team high seven goals. Zoe Longsworth was next, with five. In fact, the Hawks had nine players find the back of the net last season
  • Even with most of the team returning, the coaches were able to add a few new players who will almost instantly make an impact. Notables are Dominika Philip, Remi Pelltier and Victoria Rodrigues
  • Humber garnered many post-season awards, including OCAA Rookie of the Year, four league all-stars, two OCAA championship all-stars, and a coach of the year nod

Home Opener

The Hawks will not play their home opener until Wednesday, September 20, in a rematch with the UTM Eagles. Humber has changed its home venue, and now will play its games at the OSA Centre in Vaughan.  Game time is 4:30 pm.
