HAWKS ELIMINATED FROM NATIONALS ON TIEBREAKER

SASKATOON, SK:  The national title hopes for the Humber softball (1-2) team came to an abrupt halt Saturday evening after the Hawks fell to the University of Regina (1-2) by the score of 2-0.

For the second time in the tournament, the offence for Humber fell flat against good pitching.  Carmen Hughes was on the mound for Regina and she was able to keep the Hawks at bay all night long.

In the biggest game of the season for the Hawks thus far, head coach Duaine Bowles turned to freshman pitcher Rachel Matheson-Green (Oakville).  The freshman phenom did not disappoint and put together her most impressive performance of the year.  Matheson-Green threw Humber's third complete game of the tournament after she gave up two unearned runs on five hits in seven innings of work.

In pool B play, three teams finished 1-2 and Humber was the odd team out in the tiebreaker.   Despite beating Fanshawe and finishing with the same record, the Falcons advanced to the quarter-finals.

Even though Humber was eliminated early, their starting pitching remained a bright spot, positioning the team to make a long run in the OCAA playoffs.  Matheson-Green and Myranda Pierson (Toronto) allowed three earned runs in 21 innings of work, for a microscopic ERA of 1.00.

The biggest snub of the day came during the awards ceremony when the CCSA announced their all-stars for the tournament.  Meaghan Murphy (Brampton) went overlooked, despite hitting .500 (4/8) for the tournament and playing stellar defence.

The Hawks return to OCAA action Tuesday, October 11 against the Seneca Sting (0-20, 7th OCAA).
