HAWKS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH MOHAWK

HAWKS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH MOHAWK

HAMILTON, ON: The Humber Hawks softball (6-8, 5th OCAA) program split their doubleheader with the Mohawk Mountaineers (4-8, 6th OCAA) Tuesday evening at Mohawk Sports Park.

After sweeping the Mountaineers at home earlier in the season, the Hawks were looking to do the same on the road.  Game one began with Mohawk taking an early 2-1 lead but the bats quickly came alive for Humber in the second inning.

The Hawks sent ten hitters to the plate in the second, scoring five runs on five hits, including a two run single from former OCAA player of the week Sarah Franchetto (Guelph).

After a shutout home half of the second, the Hawks added four more runs in the third, thanks to a two run double from Elisa Gregoris (Mississauga).

From there, Humber cruised to an easy 16-3 win in five innings.  Aaliyah Davidson (Brampton) and Hilary Redrup (Carlisle) paced the way for Humber offensively, as both finished with three RBI's in the game.  The Hawks thrived at the dish, as all ten hitters who played finished with at least one hit.  Of Humber's 19 hits, eight were for extra bases.

Myranda Pierson (Toronto) picked up her fourth win of the season after throwing four innings and allowing two runs on three hits.  Amanda Van de Graaf (Mississauga) pitched the fifth and final inning and surrendered one run on two hits.

After such an offensive onslaught, it was only ironic for the Hawks bats to go silent in game two.  Mohawk grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first and from there both teams exchanged zeros on the board.

The Mountaineers added two more runs in the sixth and eventually won the game 3-0.  Despite out hitting Mohawk 6-5, Humber was unable to get a hit with runners in scoring position as they continually hit the ball hard but right at the defence.

Rachel Matheson-Green (Oakville) took her first loss on the season even though she continued to pitch well for the Hawks.  The freshman threw six innings and gave up three runs on five hits while she striking out three.

With a double in the first inning, Bonnie Gillingham (Brampton) became the all-time hits leader for Humber, surpassing the mark of 75 set by Natalie Stoberman in 2015.

The loss snapped Humber's three-game win streak and now the Hawks return home with four big games on the weekend in an attempt to keep their playoff hopes alive.  Up first is a doubleheader with Seneca College (0-12, 7th OCAA) on Saturday, October 1 then another doubleheader with Conestoga (6-6, 4th OCAA) on Sunday, October 2.  All four games will be played at Concord Regional Park.
